The Founder

Athanasios Lipordezis

Mathematical Author

Founder of the Caratheodory Museum

Athanasios (Sakis) Lipordezis was born in 1955 in Komotini and studied mathematics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. As a student, he was involved in the education of students and the writing of mathematical pamphlets. After the Faculty of Mathematics, he studied Journalism, Sociology and Psychology at the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science (CPNSS) of the London European College. In 1980 he founded the Secondary Education Tutoring Centre ‘2001 Milestone’. Continuously since 1978, he taught over 35,000 hours of mathematics in all grades.

He developed ample and successful writing works with tutorial books for Middle school and High school and for university admission, as well as books for the development of mathematical thinking such as “MATHEMATICAL CHALLENGES” which he co-authored with N. Ligeros and N. Fotiadis. He also wrote numerous articles on the history of mathematics and historical books on the life and work of the great mathematician Constantin Caratheodory.

Ten years after the establishment of the school, an important milestone in his life was the creation of a family with the teacher Pandora Albanidou.  They had two daughters, Martha Lipordezi (Mathematics AUTH) and Maria Lipordezi (Philologist-Linguist AUTH), who also pursued studies in the educational field.

In 2005 he founded the Caratheodory’s Friends Association and took dynamic action for the promotion of the great mathematician. Since 2001, he became the editor of the newspaper “Caratheodory”, which reflects on the research concerning the life and work of the Caratheodory family. Today, the association has over 1,000 active members including distinguished scientists from all over the world.

In collaboration with the Municipality of Komotini and N. Ligeros, they laid the foundations for the establishment and operation of the Caratheodory Museum in Komotini, after fifteen years of research in Greece, Israel, Poland, France, America and Germany. Thus, since 2009, the Caratheodory Museum has been in operation, attracting large numbers of visitors. From the first moment of the conception of the idea by Sakis Lipordezis, about twenty years ago, for the establishment and operation of such a museum, the aspiring vision was to play a pedagogical and at the same time a scientific role in Greek society.

He was for several years president of the Hellenic Mathematical Society at the Rhodope branch. During his term of office, he undertook the organization of the 19th Panhellenic Congress of Mathematics of the Hellenic Mathematical Society, which was inaugurated by the daughter of the great mathematician Constantin Caratheodory, Mrs. Despina Rodopoulou- Caratheodory.

He participated in over 50 international mathematics conferences with paper presentations or as a member of the organizing committee, as well as in Mathematical Olympiads. He lectured in private schools, branches of the HMS and universities.

He passed away on the 17th of February 2023.

His work and vision is continued by his daughters and his wife, who are actively involved in education, the Museum and the Caratheodory’s Friends Association.
