Objectives of the Caratheodory's Friends Association (CFA)

After the conception of the idea for the emergence of the glorious genus of Caratheodory, our first act was through the branch of the Hellenic Mathematical Society (HMS) in Rodopi to publish this newspaper, in which we would write what we discovered about C. Caratheodory and we would send it to as many members as possible, those who have joined hands with us in the pursuit of the idea to honor Caratheodory. The promotion took place en masse at the national congress of the HMS. Soon this idea created a rather large core of friends, therefore, after five years, in 2005, the Caratheodory’s Friends Association (CFA) was founded.

Among the founding members were prominent personalities such as the late historian and philologist Sarandos Kargakos, the daughter of Caratheodory, the late Despina Caratheodory, Nana

Mouskouri, Dimitrios Korellas etc.

The Association aims at the promotion of C. Caratheodory and the operation of the Caratheodory Museum, as well as their support in the concentration of acquisitions. This has had important results.

We have been able to win 7 out of 8 auctions concerning valuable acquisitions, with the help of friends of the Association who participated in the auctions. It must be noted that to our fellow citizens we owe most of our acquisitions. We have to mention Euripides Stylianidis and Vassilis Kekkeris.

The Association does not operate with subscriptions, it is solely based on and supported by the principles of volunteerism and selflessness. Nowadays, the Association has hundreds of members including many important personalities.

The primary objective of the Caratheodory’s Friends Association since its foundation has been the establishment and operation of the Caratheodory Museum. The Caratheodory’s Friends Association achieved this goal in a very short time thanks to the harmonious cooperation with the municipal authority and the late mayor Mr. Anastasios Vavatsiklis, the government by virtue of our fellow Thracian and at the time Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and later Minister of Education Mr. Stylianidis, as well as the appy coincidence of having as our ally, striving towards our common goal, one of the best minds on the planet, the multi-talented and leading scientist Mr. Nikos Lygeros, who was able to challenge the difficult task of creating this museum and turn it into a piece of cake. As a scientific advisor to the museum and the Board of Directors of the Caratheodory’s Friends Association, he managed to set up the museum in 2008 with his team and wrote detailed descriptions for each display case in the museum.

Since then, by means of the excellent cooperation with DKEPPAK and Mrs. Natasha Liveriadou, we took over the management of the museum, a museum which attracts large numbers of visitors from schools and groups from all over the world, even America.

In addition, there was the improvement of some facilities with the help of Mrs. Felina Kazakou, president of DKEPPAK under the mayoralty of Dimitrios Kotsakis, for the protection of the museum’s archives.

A specialized museologist, our fellow citizen Mrs Anastasia Efthymiou, was then employed by the City for 8-months.

The President of the Caratheodory’s Friends Association and Director of the Museum of Caratheodory, Mr. Athanasios Lipordezis, together with the scientific advisor Mr. Nikos Lygeros “scoured” Greece and Cyprus and gave lectures in universities (more than 50),

associations, branches of the HMS, scientific conferences (more than 30), for the purpose of inviting the broader public and students to visit the museum.

This is how the vision of international recognition for the museum was realized, so that today we could come to believe in the development it deserved, with its transfer to the Tsanakleio Hall and the received subsidy from the Ministry of Culture.
