Mission to Göttingen, in the footsteps of the great mathematician C. Caratheodory

Letters of C. Caratheodory addressed to the great mathematicians of Germany such as Hilbert, Klein, Kneser and Bieberbach.

Following in the footsteps of the great mathematician C. Caratheodory, they found themselves in Göttingen, searching for his letters with the great mathematicians of Germany such as Hilbert, Klein, Kneser and Bieberbach.

The scientific advisor of the Caratheodory Museum, Nikos Lygeros, and Sakis Lipordezis, the director of the Museum, recently travelled to Germany and specifically to Göttingen in search of the letters which were sent from Constantin Caratheodory to the great mathematicians of Germany.

 

It was in Göttingen where they realized that his choice to study and become an assistant professor at first and later on a professor was not at all a simple coincidence. For Göttingen was already, at that time, the world centre for mathematics. We must not forget that in the twentieth century, more than 40 Nobel Prizes were awarded to scientists working in Göttingen. It is therefore reasonable that the city was called the city of science.
